Senior Government Officials Welcome The Launch Of The Global Councils For Sustainable Development Goals





Senior government officials have welcomed the launch of the Global Councils for Sustainable Development Goals, announced by H.E. Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Chairwoman of the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, at the 'SDGs in Action 2018' event in Dubai.

The Global Councils for Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to promote innovation and creativity in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, will include an group of the most prominent decision makers from different sectors and fields, including governments, international organisations and bodies as well as the business sector and academic institutions. This international entity will serve as a platform for exchanging innovative best practices and tools for implementing the global development goals.

Each council will have a chairperson and many directors supporting him/her representing the world's largest organisations from more than 90 countries. These councils are established with the goal of strengthening cooperation and synergies to achieve tangible results in realising the sustainable development goals at the international level.

H.E. Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansoori, Minister of Economy, said: "The launch of the Global Councils for Sustainable Development Goals is another step that highlights the UAE's keenness to contribute to the global efforts to achieve the sustainable development goals. Its formation reflects the directives of our wise leadership, thus playing a pivotal role in building bridges of cooperation with international bodies and organisations to achieve sustainable development at the local and international levels.

"The Councils will serve as an ideal platform to put forward innovative ideas and to identify international best experiences and practices to catalyse the development of policies that contribute to developing the country's competitiveness and encourage public-private partnerships. This will help advance the efforts to achieve the sustainable development goals and agenda locally and internationally, and contribute to building a balanced, diversified and sustainable knowledge-based economy by 2021," Al Mansoori added.

H.E. Abdul-Rahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention and Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs

H.E. Abdul-Rahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention, Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs, said: "The Global Councils for Sustainable Development Goals is yet another achievement that adds to the UAE's global achievements and initiatives. These aim to consolidate our nation's leading position and drive global efforts to find innovative and effective solutions to the key issues facing the international community today. The UAE views sustainable development as one of the most important concerns that require urgent and careful consideration and synergies to develop visions and mechanisms that help in achieving its objectives, and promoting the advancement of societies at the international level, especially in the field of healthcare. Such efforts play a great role in furthering the prospects of healthcare advancement to ensure a healthy and safe future for humanity, as healthy living is one of the most important issues that affect the human race as a whole."

H.E. Obaid Bin Humaid Al Tayer, Minister of State for Financial Affairs

HE Obaid Bin Humaid Al Tayer, Minister of State for Financial Affairs, said: "The UAE government constantly seeks to build bridges of international cooperation and opening channels of effective communication with all stakeholders around the world to discuss means of investing economic tools and resources in activating plans, vision and strategy to achieve the objectives of comprehensive development. This will be the focus of the initiative for the Global Councils on Sustainable Development Goals in developing appropriate mechanisms for harnessing resources to achieve economic development, that are an integral part of overall development and a catalyst for growth in across all sectors."

H.E. Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, said: "Led by the guidance of the wise leadership, the UAE is always the first to launch global initiatives aimed at enhancing international cooperation to stimulate the implementation of plans for promoting the sustainable development goals at the global level. The development of the education sector is one of the fundamentals of sustainable development, and providing education to all members of society is one of the key instruments for achieving its objectives. The formation of the Global Councils will be an extension of our efforts to ensure quality education for all segments of society. This is achieved by developing a model educational system with a high level of competitiveness, thus improving the quality of its outputs to meet the current and future labour market requirements. This educational system is centred on promoting patriotism and moral education, improving scientific research and directing human energies towards science, technology and innovation." 

H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi - Minister of Infrastructure Development

H.E. Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development, said: "The Global Councils for Sustainable Development is a strategic step towards the goal of sharing the UAE's pioneering experience in developing long-term visions and strategies. These are aimed at developing the UAE's infrastructure, and in driving investments to transform all government services into smart services, in accordance with the best international practices. This has enabled the nation to top the world's development indicators, as infrastructure is vital to achieving sustainable development."

H.E. Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi - Minister of Climate Change and Environment

H.E. Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment: "Led by the directives of our wise leadership, the UAE seeks to develop long-term visions and strategies to acheive a balance between increasing humanitarian needs and environmental protection, as this balance is paramount to achieving comprehensive sustainable development. We look forward to discussing the mechanisms and actionplans adopted by the UAE Government through the Global Councils for Sustainable Development Goals. As its members, we will work to promote development without adversely impacting our natural resources, and to activate the role of constructive dialogue in discussing mechanisms to conserve the environment."

H.E. Hessa bint Eisa Bu Humaid - Minister of Community Development

H.E. Hessa bint Eisa Bu Humaid, Minister of Community Development, said: "The UAE has a clear strategy and a transparent plan of action to achieve the highest levels of community development for the entire UAE population, which is closely related to comprehensive sustainable development. We are happy to discuss these plans and strategies through our contributions to the Global Councils for Sustainable Development Goals. Community development is one of the main pillars upon which comprehensive sustainable development is based. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without investing in society and empowering individuals to establish a strong and cohesive society for all its members."

H.E.
